The most underrated asset in your content strategy

September 3, 2026

Geek out with me for a moment, and let's talk about the most underrated asset in your content strategy: the whitepaper.

It's the forgotten cousin in a content library full of louder, flashier formats.

It's not going viral any time soon. Nobody's slacking it to their boss saying, “let’s try this!!” or bringing it up on a first date (well, ok unless you’re in DC maybe).

But it’s steady and consistent, and it’s still one of the most effective things you can put your name on to earn trust with the right people.

While whitepapers may get fewer downloads than an ebook or lead magnet, NetLine's 2025 State of B2B Content Consumption Report found the people who downloaded one were 31% more likely to make an actual purchase decision within 12 months.

Whitepapers also skew toward buyers already in a 3-6 month buying window, meaning the people reading aren't casually browsing. They're in decision mode.

This is one of the reasons we started expanding our thought leadership services beyond LinkedIn last year.

The posts build great visibility and connections, but having a long-form, substantive piece of content like a whitepaper is what converts that visibility into something a buyer acts on.

It becomes an asset that gets shared with the rest of the buying committee and pulled back out when it's time to pick a vendor.

The whitepapers that actually work are absurdly specific. One niche problem, one niche audience. They include a point of view that only you could have written, because you're the one who's actually solved it.

Here’s one example: We just wrapped up a whitepaper for our client, Simple Thread, a company that builds software that helps utilities run interconnection and hosting-capacity studies faster (see what I mean by niche problem, niche audience?).

We wrote the whitepaper for renewable energy developers and transmission planners navigating the U.S. interconnection queue.

It talks about a process that has quietly become one of the biggest financial risk factors in the entire industry. Nobody outside that world would read past the title, but people inside it feel the frustration deeply.

It opens by proving that the team understands the problem better than most: how study timelines have stretched to nearly five years, how a single late-stage cost surprise can blow up a project's entire economics, how the vast majority of what's sitting in the queue right now will never get built.

Only after that problem is fully on the table do we then introduce their cloud-based SaaS platform as the answer.

  1. Problem first.
  2. Expertise follows.
  3. Then the product becomes the obvious solution.

That journey from problem-aware to obvious solution can take months and months to build with someone who just connected with you on LinkedIn.

This whitepaper allows the founder, Justin Etheredge, to continue building expertise and authority through his LinkedIn content (not selling in every post), and use the whitepaper as leverage in DM conversations, on a call, in a meeting, or at a conference.

Is a whitepaper right for you?

A whitepaper is a big undertaking, so I don’t recommend it for everyone. This one took months of research, team collaboration, and input from subject-matter experts to produce something that matches the caliber of Simple Thread’s work.

It's probably not the right move yet if you're just starting to build your authority online, or if what you do is still fairly broad rather than tied to one specific, well-defined problem.

Your best next step is starting smaller: consistent posts and articles that help you find your voice and narrow in on your niche before you invest in something this substantial.

But if you're an expert solving a complex problem for a specific audience, a whitepaper can be one of the best investments you make, especially if you have a longer sales cycle that you’d like to shorten, or if you keep finding yourself explaining the same problem to prospects over and over again.

A whitepaper can cut that repetition way down by shrinking the knowledge gap between you and your primary audience.

It also puts your name on the problem and the solution, in one document, that lives on your terms and works while you sleep. You're not waiting for someone to stumble across your expertise and connect the dots themselves. You're handing them the dots, already connected, with your name right at the top.

When I asked Justin if this was worth the work, here’s what he said:

“Partnering with Cause Fokus on the Flying Blind whitepaper was a game-changer for us. They took complex technical concepts and turned them into a clear, compelling story that helps establish our credibility. It's been an incredible asset for building trust and opening doors with our target clients." — Justin Etheredge, Founder, Simple Thread

This didn't happen overnight, though.

We'd been working with Justin on his LinkedIn thought leadership for over a year before this whitepaper ever came together. It was the natural next layer of work we were already doing with him, a way to go deeper on the expertise he'd already been building in public.

If he'd been silent on LinkedIn that whole year, this whitepaper doesn't land the same way. There's no audience already primed to trust him and no built-in demand waiting for it. It’s why with every client, we start small, validate, then scale.

If you want to start building that level of expertise, where people at conferences are referencing your work, just reply here. I’ll take a look at where you are today and give you your next three steps to take between now and the end of the year.

Every week you put this off is a week of revenue, recognition, and opportunity you don't get back.
